Note: Starting with this Owner’s Log post, updates will be quarterly for the first year, semi-annually after that.

Stats:

Time Period: 10/19/2011 – 1/18/2011
Miles Driven: 3,601 (first quarter of ownership)
Average MPG: 16.3 mpg (reported by on-board computer, matches hand-calculated)

Costs:

Maintenance Costs: $0.00
Total Cost (non-fuel): $0.00

Services Performed:

none

Summary:

The F-150 has performed admirably for all it’s been tasked with, including hauling several hundred pounds of firewood, a load which consisted of lawn care equipment and personal belongings, as well as around 1,500 miles of highway driving through MD, VA and PA. Gas mileage around town has been closer to 13 than to 15, which is a bit disappointing – but based on research I’ve done on several owner’s forums, the EcoBoost V6 engine isn’t fully broken in until somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 miles.

Speaking of the EcoBoost engine, its power is amazing. While trudging up the Pennsylvania Turnpike at highway speeds, the truck never downshifted out of 6th gear unless prompted to by my using the SelectShift feature of the transmission. I only locked out 6th gear because the exhaust was “droning” when traveling around 65 mph, which held the engine’s revs at around 1,600. Downshifting to 5th gear brought the RPMs up to around 2,000, which lessened the exhaust note considerably. When driving around town with the bed 2/3 full of firewood, the only thing that reminded me of the load was that the rear leaf springs had sagged an inch or two.

I mentioned earlier that the city fuel mileage was lower than expected, but the highway mileage has been pretty good at 18 to 19 MPGs. It would’ve been better, but the PA Turnpike includes a lot of uphill grades.

Also on the highway for several hours, I used a decibel meter on my iPhone to keep track of sound levels in the cab, and was quite pleased. With all the windows closed, the meter registered an average of 73 dB, and with the driver’s window open a couple of inches, that number only climbed to 84 dB.

Armed with all the creature comforts the F-150 is carrying makes highway miles fly by; road trips seem a lot quicker than they really are. The seats proved comfortable in most regards for the 300-mile trips, except for some lower back pain, which is probably due to an improperly-adjusted driver’s seat. Turning on the heated seat made the pain go away. Meanwhile, my wife had no comfort issues whatsoever, sleeping for hours on end.

The only real glitch I’ve experienced was with the SYNC and navigation systems, which froze up for a few minutes, as you’ll see below.

Dated Notes:

10.22.2011 – SYNC / Navigation froze. The navigation functionality returned several minutes later, but it took a full stop (engine off, key out of the ignition, open driver’s door) to reset the radio. Haven’t been able to replicate this issue since.

General Observations:

The EcoBoost has a ton of power – the truck’s transmission doesn’t have to downshift on upgrade hills of even 4 degrees.

Sirius in the F-150 has a much better signal than XM did in my 2010 Nissan Maxima. Whereas the Maxima’s XM signal would cut out for brief periods in several places on my morning commute, the F-150′s signal only drops out once. On the highway in Pennsylvania, the XM cut out so much on some days that I used my iPhone as an audio source instead. The F-150, in contrast, rarely cut out.

Services Performed:

11/08/11 – Sched. maintenance to include multi-point inspection,

battery check, tire wear, brake pads, etc., revealed all good to go. Only cost incurred was for routine replacement of the micro cabin filter. All systems good to go. . $82.50

12/02/11 – Factory recall, navigation system update. N/C

Nothing of note to report except that the car continues to run well, period. So far, I’ve been spared the issues that John Suit experienced in his Maxima with the balky rear sun shade, assorted rattles, and the Rocking Seat Syndrome. Other systems such as brakes, electronics, etc., have performed as expected.

A quick reminder of what Phil’s car looks like:

Quarter 2 Update:

Stats:

Time period covered: 10/01/2010 – 12/31/2010
Miles driven this reporting period: 2,521, average MPG this reporting period: 20.9 (reported by owner)
Lifetime miles driven (6 mos.) 4,333, average MPG lifetime: 20.6

Services Performed:

New car inspection and first oil/filter change.

Costs:
Maintenance: $0 (initial oil/filter change and inspection – gratis)
Other costs (non-fuel): $0
Total costs: $0

Dated Notes:

10/28/10: Took car to dealership for 3000 mile initial checkup and oil change. No issues were noted during this service, which was provided gratis.

Comments:

Three minor but annoying issues that surfaced during this inspection service left me less than pleased and with an unmistakable impression that the local service personnel were not as well informed as one would hope.

First issue: I had purchased a small (half-dollar sized) convex mirror to affix to my exterior rear view mirror, driver’s side. However, the Service Manager - after consulting with his technical services manual - was unable to advise me where best to place this convex mirror to avoid interfering with the auto-dimming feature of the mirror (I assumed that the dimming receptor was located behind the rear view mirror, but within mirror housing). However, when I later posed the same question to John Suit, he immediately informed me that the auto dimming receptor was housed within the interior rear view mirror. Thanks, John.

Second issue: In driving the car, my sense was that the ride seemed unduly harsh. I asked service to check the air pressure in the tires and the service attendant reported 42 psi. When I suggested to him that the owner’s manual indicated that proper pressure should be at 32 psi, he commented the air pressure in all cars were set to 42 psi at the dealership prior to delivery because it provided for a better driving experience. Rather than argue the point, I simply thanked him for his opinion and asked him to reduce the air pressure to 32 psi as indicated in the specifications page. I can honestly say that the car now rides much more like a comfortable sedan than a truck.

Third issue: At the completion of the initial inspection/service, the service manager drew my attention to a statement in the work order that read ” . . . Vehicle requires ester oil, regular price $70,” exclusive of filter and labor charges. This is a far cry from my local gas station which charges about $21 for brand name API certified oil, and if followed would represent a cost increase of about 400% per oil change! Accordingly, I e-mailed an enquiry to Nissan North America so I would have an official response for the record. Extracts:

Question: “. . . At the conclusion of this initial service, the technician called my attention to a notation within the invoice that specified my vehicle requires (emphasis added) Nissan Ester Oil (regular price $70 + cost of filter and labor). However, my Nissan owner’s manual simply states in the Capacities and Recommended Fuel/Lubricants section (Page 9-2) that one should use engine oil with the API Certification Mark / Viscosity SAE 5w-30. In separate footnotes on the same page, Nissan merely recommends use of Genuine Nissan Ester Oil, and advises that further details may be found in the Engine Oil and Oil Filter Recommendations section (Page 9-5). There it states ” . . .Nissan recommends the use of an energy conserving oil in order to improve fuel economy. Select only oils that meet the American Petroleum Institute (API) certification or International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) certification and SAE viscosity standard . . .” That section also does not speak to a requirement to use Nissan Ester Oil, and in fact, I am unable to find any statement anywhere in the owner’s manual that requires the use of Nissan Ester Oil.

Here are my questions: Does Nissan require or does it simply recommend the use of Nissan Ester Oil? The difference is more than semantic because Nissan’s Ester Oil is significantly more expensive than commonly used, alternative lubricants. If it is required, any such deviation from normally expected maintenance requirements should have been disclosed prior to purchase. Finally, in the absence of a requirement, please advise me whether the use of popular brand conventional or synthetic oils in lieu of Nissan Ester Oil would invalidate my warranty.”

Nissan Response: ” . . . In regards to your oil inquiry, as you had previously referenced from the 2010 Maxima Owner’s Manual, “Nissan recommends the use of an energy conserving oil in order to improve fuel economy. Select only engine oils that meet the American Petroleum Institute (API) certification or International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) certification and SAE viscosity standard. These oils have the API certification mark on the front of the container. Oils which do not have the specified quality label should not be used as they could cause engine damage.

The above referenced information is a recommendation, not a requirement. The engine oil viscosity or thickness changes with temperature choosing an oil viscosity other than that recommended could cause serious engine damage. If damage is caused to the engine due to using a viscosity which is not recommended, this would not be considered a warrantable failure, and I (sic) turn would not be covered.”

While on the topic of “recommendation” vice “requirement,” I noted for the record in my first quarterly report that Nissan also recommends use of premium (high octane) unleaded fuel in the Maxima. However, I successfully used regular unleaded gasoline for seven years on my previous ’04 Maxima SL without any trouble and sensed no noticeable impact on performance; I am continuing that practice with my 2010 Maxima without observable degradation of performance whether in the city or on the highway. To be fair, John Suit offers his own comments on this subject in his Ed. Note appended to my first quarterly report.

All things considered, owning and driving my 2010 Maxima SV has been a rewarding experience thus far. After six months, I love driving it. As soon as I get in, the steering wheel telescopes and the seat and external mirrors automatically adjust to my preset preference, and move out of the way to facilitate easy exit. Although the mileage driven is relatively low, I have so far been spared popping noises coming from the roof, and complaints about the navigation system (see Ted Sanders 1st quarterly report dated 11/26 - http://www.road-reality.com/2010/06/28/owners-log-2010-nissan-maxima-update-1/#comment-9026), which has performed exceptionally well except for one non-recurring episode reported in my first submission. One other observation: I had thought that illumination left something to be desired when driving after dark, but setting the fog lights to activate automatically with the headlamps seems to have resolved that issue.

Comments:

Driving my 2010 SV has been a rewarding experience thus far. After nine months, I love driving it. There have been no problems of any type, and no costs incurred thus far from June 30 thru today’s date. For sure, the more I drive the car, the more I appreciate it’s many qualities such as the smoothness of the CVT (I’ve never felt the slightest need to use the paddle shifters), the handling, the navigation system with its voice recognition and ease of operation, the on-screen touch controls, use of the phone, the clarity of the reverse camera, etc etc. Most automotive ratings/reviews don’t rank the Maxima at the top of its class (nor the bottom, for that matter), but for me, driving it leaves me very satisfied, and that’s what counts. When I exit the car, the steering wheel retracts and rises out of the way, while the driver’s seat slides all the way back, making exiting very easy. The reverse is equally true, as the steering wheel telescopes and the seat and external mirrors automatically adjust to my preset preference. The heated steering wheel (more than a few “luxury” vehicles do not have this feature) is a nice touch during cold winter days, although the on/off switch for it is located low on the dash just above the left knee, out of sight and better found by feel than sight. The same could be said for the knob that regulates heating and cooling for the driver’s seat – it’s location on the console in front of the gear shift lever makes it hard to find and awkward to use. I think it worth noting that while I’m not driving a hybrid or gas-sipping compact, it seems to me that achieving 19.7 mpg in mostly city driving in a powerful V-6 is not bad at all. I’m looking forward to the coming months, when hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to experience more open road driving beyond the Washington beltway. In the meantime, I’ll look to John Suit’s road-reality and it’s contributors to set the benchmark for meaningful ownership reporting.

Stats:

Time Period: 9/16/2010 – 12/15/2010
Miles Driven: 4,123 / 11,382 (this update / total) (3,034 last update)
Average MPG: 21.6 mpg (reported by on-board computer)

Costs:

Maintenance Costs: $78.50
Total Cost (non-fuel): $184.22

Services Performed:

10/11/2010 – $0.00 – Warranty work performed to stop the “popping” noise coming from the roof. (read related article)

11/5/2010 – $78.50 – Second oil change, at 10,000 miles, using Nissan OEM filter and Mobile 1 Synthetic, as well as a tire rotation. I bought the oil at Costco for $34.85, and the service was performed at a local automotive repair shop.

Summary:

As it’s gotten colder, the heated steering wheel and heated seats are performing admirably, and are very useful options. Between that and the automatic climate control, driving when it’s cold outside is made much more comfortable. I attribute the increased fuel mileage to the engine breaking in, the extra road trips and less need for air conditioning.

Dated Notes:

9/26/2010 – Just returned from a road trip – even with some stop-and-go traffic, the Maxima averaged 25 mpg.

10/4/2010 – First chilly days of fall, and the heated steering wheel is awesome!

10/24/2010 – Another road trip, this time from the Washington, D.C. area to Pittsburgh, PA. Averaged 25.5 mpg, so it looks like the engine is breaking in nicely. This gas mileage is higher than expected due to the large elevation changes during the drive to and from Pittsburgh.

General Observations:

The driver’s-side windshield wiper slings water onto the passenger side of the windshield, leaving water on that area. Not a huge nitpick, but annoying nonetheless.

When really pressing on the gas pedal, the car wants to “tramline,” where it steers back and forth a little bit. This is only problematic when driving over pavement which isn’t pristine.

Learned a tidbit about the 2009+ Maxima’s gas pedal. Once you’ve “put the pedal to the metal,” there is another half inch or so (just push harder), which allows you to use the car’s full acceleration potential.

When going downhill, the car automatically attempts to prevent you from picking up speed – great for going down steep hills!

I’ve listed the following ten vehicles in alphabetical order by manufacturer. Let me know what you think in the Forums! (INSERT LINK TO FORUM TOPIC HERE)

Buick Regal

The Buick Regal brings back a tarnished nameplate for the semi-luxury GM brand, using the German engineering of GM’s Opel subsidiary. By designing the Opel to be more modular, including swapping headlights, taillights and badges, the Regal is a good example of badge engineering, a strategy that hasn’t worked out well for it, Chrysler or Ford. That’s not to say it’s a bad move for General Motors, since it injects some distinctly European flair into the traditionally stodgy domestic brand. With rave reviews, the new Regal is off to a good sales start, and works well as Buick’s entry-level car. For the 2011 model year, Buick will only be offering the CXL trim, with base and Turbo models, starting at $26,995 and $29,495, respectively. For 2012, the lineup will grow to three trim levels, and production will move from Europe to Canada. It’s a game-changer for Buick, which needs to bring its average buyer age down a good ways to stay in business.

Cadillac CTS Coupe / Wagon (plus V variants)

For Cadillac to really be the “New Standard of the World,” as their advertising would suggest, they need to compete head-to-head with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Taking the CTS sedan’s solid structure and sales and adding coupe and wagon variants goes a long way towards accomplishing this goal. Expanding the CTS lineup is Cadillac’s first shot across BMW’s bow, and with all three body types containing the amenities and style BMW buyers are looking for, it should hit its mark. By offering performance-oriented V models, Cadillac is banking on the success of its CTS-V sedan to steal buyers of BMW’s M3 and Mercedes’ C63 AMG.

Chevrolet Volt (also notable: Chevrolet Cruze)

Finally, a mass-market electric car is coming to market. While it may not be electric-only, the range-extending gas engine should dispel range anxiety – the fear of running out of juice before returning to a charging station. With government subsidies, the Volt will be starting at around $33,000, but plan on spending another $2,000 or so to charge your Volt in less than 10 hours. The Volt is competing directly with the Nissan Leaf in the media, even though the Leaf is electric-only. By sharing its underpinnings with Chevrolet’s upcoming Cruze, GM could design the powertrain and other components separately, which saves the beleaguered automaker untold millions in development money. It also allowed the General to up its game in the small car segment, where the existing Cobalt has been a non-starter.

Ford Fiesta (also notable: Mazda Mazda2)

With the success of BMW’s Mini and the price of gas, some Americans have started to embrace the truly small car. The only hurdle left is convincing buyers who have a hard time putting $20,000 into a small car when for a few thousand dollars more, you can get a much larger one. The trick Ford is using is its SYNC infotainment system and high quality materials, fit and finish, as well as other amenities normally found in larger cars, such as heated leather seats. The Fiesta also re-starts Ford’s global car initiative, which stalled when redesigns of its Focus weren’t brought to the US from Europe, where the Focus is a much more popular car. Furthermore, even though Ford sold its controlling interest in Mazda, the two companies are still working together, including the platform that both the Fiesta and Mazda’s Mazda2 ride on. The Mazda2 promises to be a more fun to drive car, even while the Mazda is cheaper and has less options available.

Hyundai Sonata

After the initial success of the Genesis sedan and coupe, Hyundai is continuing its roll by revamping the Sonata mid-sized sedan. Already on sale, the Korean automaker has already moved a significant amount of metal, and for good reasons. Better-equipped, better materials, and three models to suit a bevy of tastes means the Sonata is really earning its place as Hyundai’s bread and butter car. Initially, only one model is available, in several trim levels, staring at around $20,000, but soon we’ll see the Hybrid and Turbo models debuting. Offering class-leading fuel economy, the Sonata is Hyundai’s first attack at upcoming CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements.

Jaguar XJ

Jaguar’s styling seemingly hasn’t changed in decades, but the XF sedan which debuted in 2008 started a design revolution for the English brand. The XJ continues that, and brings Jaguar into the 21st century style-wise. The new XJ also brings Jaguar’s electronics up to speed, to compete with Audi, BMW and Mercedes. As long as the trick electronics hold up, Jaguar could have a hit on its hands, bringing the automaker back into the limelight of luxury cars.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

As I’ve written before, Jeep is rebuilding a legend with the 2011 Grand Cherokee SUV. With a less truck-like look, ride and feel, but with all the gadgets buyers expect, the Grand Cherokee looks like a winner. Jeep may lose some of its more rugged buyers, but it still offers the Wrangler to those buyers. The new Grand Cherokee rides on the last-gen Mercedes ML chassis, which is why it rides better, but its new platform also brings with it a much-improved off-road setup, so it’s a win-win for Jeep. Chrysler also gets to use this opportunity to refresh its Durango, a less-expensive and more sport-oriented alternative to the Grand Cherokee.

Nissan Leaf

For years, Nissan has been more a niche player than a mass-market manufacturer. With sales that lag behind that of Honda and Toyota, it has best competed with Mazda. Both automakers offer fun-to-drive vehicles that sell in smaller numbers, save the Mazda3. Nissan’s hybrid offerings have also fell behind that of Ford, Honda and Toyota, so it needed something unique to offer in the fuel economy wars. Enter the Leaf, a small plug-in electric car. With a range of 100 miles, the Leaf will work for a lot of commuters whose drives don’t include a lot of highway miles. The downside? Range anxiety. As the distance-to-empty meter gets closer to zero, drivers will be looking long and hard for a charging station. Major markets like LA, D.C. and New York will be building the charging stations, but most owners will be using in-home chargers, which will cost around $2,000. Reportedly, Nissan will be building the cost of the charger into the cost of purchase or lease, which is a smart move, and the rumor mill also says week-long loaner cars, with regular gasoline engines, will be available. It’s tough to say how well the Leaf will do, but I expect it to sell decently in the 150 or so markets it will be available, as long as the advertised range stays true when in the hands of consumers.

Scion tC

Toyota’s youth-oriented brand was originally designed to have single-generation vehicles replaced in 4-5 year increments. With steady sales of its tC model, Toyota executives commissioned a second generation, which ups the tC’s game with fresh design inside and out, as well as the speaker system from the Lexus LX470, a seriously bold move, and one which is bound to sway a fair number of younger buyers who are also audiophiles.

Volvo S60

Long believed to be more into safety than driving dynamics, Volvo needs less boring vehicles. Enter the 2011 S60 mid-sized sedan, which Volvo has been advertising as being “naughty.” Completely redesigned, the Volvo offers buyers the safety they’ve come to like, with proper handling and ride to go with it.

This is true, but better gasoline companies use special additives and detergents to prevent extra build-up of material inside your engine. I still believe in following what the manufacturer recommends for fuel type – click here to read more on this subject. – Ed.

General Observations:

My overall evaluation is very positive, so it is easy enough to focus on the few less than sterling items. As John Suit aptly noted in his review, a “throaty snarl” accompanies acceleration; in my view, it adds little of value to the driving experience and in fact is somewhat annoying. However, the “snarl” is quick enough to subside and return to a more pleasant resonance as speed is achieved. My first experience with the navigation system unhappily put me on the wrong side of the road at construction/traffic plagued Tysons Corner, but since then there have been no hiccups. While discussing navigation, the necessity of switching to the “appropriate” regional map to find addresses located outside “my region” is baffling, since the navigation system on my wife’s Acura requires no such partition of address databases by region. The ride is fairly stiff as one would expect in a vehicle with sports car lineage and aspirations, but it is not unpleasant on decently paved streets and highways. So far, with the exception of the observations reported above, everything works as advertised and as it should – no glitches, no surprises.
