Detroit 2012: Ford Announces 2013 Fusion

Ford’s Fusion, which debuted in the 2006 model year, was a big milestone for Ford.  It marked the beginning of a turnaround for Ford’s car division, which lost its way after the much-lauded Taurus became a dinosaur in the mid-sized sedan market.  Since the Taurus/Five Hundred had moved up to the full-size sedan market, a new mid-sized sedan was called for, especially one which would be competitive against offerings from Honda and Toyota.  The Fusion has been a great success, especially since its 2010 refresh, and for 2013, Ford is pulling out all the stops with its redesign.  Continue reading for details, pictures and Ford’s press release.

Test Drive: 2011 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD

For 2011, Ford released its first full redesign of its storied Explorer since the 2002 update.  It’s no longer truck-based, instead owing parts of its underpinnings to Volvo, Ford and Lincoln vehicles.  Yet, it rides up high, has 3 rows of seating, a “terrain management” knob for all 4 of its driven wheels, which puts it in the CUV/SUV category.  Read on for my driving impressions of Ford’s new Explorer.

AllThingsD’s Walt Mossberg Reviews MyFord Touch

A while back, I posted an article about the new 2011 Ford Edge, which is the first Ford to feature their new generation of SYNC, dubbed MyFord Touch.  The system uses a pair of LCDs flanking the speedometer and an 8″ touch screen, as well as touch-sensitive buttons on the center console, to bring all your infotainment needs together.  Well, AllThingD’s Walt Mossberg, who happens to be a friend of mine, got his hands on a 2011 Edge to review MyFord Touch.  Overall, it looks like he likes the new system and that it works well, but it has a steeper-than-average learning curve which may confuse some drivers.  Head on over to AllThingsD.com to check it out.

Redesigned: 2011 Ford Edge

Not content to revamp the rest of its product line, including the original Edge crossover, Ford has seen fit to redesign it for the 2011 model year.  With 3 available engines, a new interior and exterior, the 2011 Ford Edge looks nice both inside and out.  Ford has sold 330,000 Edges since it went on sale in 2006, and expects the new design to sell even better.  Included in the 2011 redesign is the Sport model, which will combine more sporty performance with a distinctive interior and aerodynamics package.  Continue reading for videos and lots of high-resolution images.

Ford Sync 2.0, er MyFord Touch

Those of you with a SYNC-equipped vehicle will balk at the headline, as there already exists SYNC 2.0 software.  This is the 2nd iteration of Ford’s SYNC system, dubbed MyFord Touch.  It consists of an 8″ touch screen interface in the center stack of a vehicle’s dashboard, as well as two 4.2″ LCD screens flanking a regular speedometer in the instrument cluster.    For a preview of the screens this system will use, see the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid.  The pictures show some of the possibilities, but read on for more details.

Next-generation Ford Focus Announced!

Ten years ago, the 2000 Ford Focus hit our shores, along with promises from Ford that this was a true “global” car, where the same car was sold in multiple markets.  The only differences would be right and left-hand drive versions of the car, but everything else would stay the same.  Flash-forward a few years, and Europe got a redesigned Focus, while the U.S. Focus carried on unchanged.  In 2005, when we finally got a redesigned Focus, it wasn’t even close to the European Focus.  Ford announced this week that when the next-generation Focus arrives, it truly will be a global car.
