Breaking News: Hummer sale falls through, GM to wind it down

I know I’ve said it before in the case of Saab, but this time I believe GM – they’re going to wind down the Hummer brand.  It seems the sale of Hummer to Chinese company Tengzhong cannot be completed.  No word yet on why, but it may have something to do with intellectual property, since the Hummer H2 and H3 share their platforms with current Chevrolet/GMC products.  GM says it will honor Hummer warranties and continue to supply parts for vehicles already on the road.

Video: Hummer H2 saves the day!

If you live on the eastern seaboard of the US, you know that a huge snowstorm came through the mid-atlantic area and dumped 2+ feet of snow on us.  In a bit of bad luck, a Baltimore City snow plow got stuck in the fluffy white stuff.  Lucky for the snow plow, a Hummer H2 was nearby, and was able to get the plow back in service.  Click past the jump to see the H2 in action.

Industry Update: Company Ownership

Since the early 1900s, vehicle manufacturers have been buying and selling each other, trying to grow their combined business.  Some of these ploys work (GM buying Cadillac in 1909) while others fizzle out (GM buying Hummer in 1998).  In today’s uncertain automotive times, the Detroit 3 are trying to streamline their companies, to cut operating costs and slough off under performing brands.  In order to answer the question of whose product you’re really buying when you buy a car, truck or SUV in America, I will go into a little detail as to which companies are on the block, which have already been sold, and which are dying (or already deceased).
