GM Recalls Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS for Misplaced Cables

GM has another power steering fluid leak on its hands, this time on the Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS, affecting 2010-2011 model years for both vehicles.  There are over 16,000 affected vehicles, all with V8 engines, and the issue can lead to loss of power steering or worse.  Click past the jump for more details and the NHTSA’s press release.

GM Recalling 2010 Cadillac SRX Over Fire Concerns

The 2010 Cadillac SRX has already had one safety recall, and now it has another.  A total of 3,996 SRX crossovers, built in December of 2009, are being recalled because of a possibility of fire.  An unattended SRX caught fire when its power steering lines were damaged, which leaked fluid onto “hot engine parts,” according to the press release.  This caused a fire in the engine compartment.  No accidents or injuries have been reported, and General Motors believes that this issue is limited to only 2 or 3 vehicles, but is recalling almost 4,000 of them just to be safe.  Click past the jump for the press release.

Garmin Recalls Nav Units, Affects Automotive Market

Remember the laptop battery recalls which came and went a couple years ago?  Yeah, me too.  It seems that an unknown number of Garmin satellite navigation units can spark a fire if their faulty batteries get too hot.  The affected units are available both as built-in navigation units sold with a car and through the aftermarket.

There’s a long list of recalled units after the jump, including specific recalls from Nissan and Suzuki.  As more manufacturers figure out specifics, we’ll be sure and keep you informed.

Older Jeep Grand Cherokee under investigation for gas tank problem

According to Automotive News, the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV is under an investigation for possible gas tank problems.  So far, the NHTSA has been notified of 13 deaths as the result of 10 crashes, while Business Week is reporting a total of 55 deaths.  The investigation is reportedly being asked for by the Center for Automotive Safety, a non-profit group founded by Ralph Nader.  Chrysler is cooperating with the NHTSA fully, and although “The existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect … Further review and investigation into these incidents is needed.”

Hot Car, Literally: Tata Nano catches fire

An insurance agent by the name of Satish Sawant recently took delivery of his brand new Tata Nano, in Mumbai.  He doesn’t have a license to drive yet, so he arranged to be chauffeured home in his new ride.  On the way home, however, a motorcyclist pulled alongside and motioned to the rear of the vehicle.  When Sawant looked around, he saw that the rear end of his brand new car was engulfed in flames.  He and the driver got out of the car safely, but as you can see, the car didn’t fare so well.
