Detroit 2012: 2013 Dodge Dart Makes Its Debut (w/Video)

The compact car market is a fiercely-fought one in the United States.  Both younger and cost-conscious buyers are looking for good value, great fuel economy, technology and attractive styling.  If a single vehicle meets all of these criteria, it’ll most likely be successful.  While the Neon sold well in both Dodge and Plymouth guises, the Caliber – which replaced the Neon in 2005 – hasn’t had the same sales success.  For the 2013 model year, Dodge is reintroducing its storied nameplate, the Dart.  Read on for pictures and details about Dodge’s hot new compact.

Redesigned Chrysler 300 Makes its Debut

At long last, the Chrysler 300 is getting an update!  Since its introduction in 2005 model year, it’s seen only minor changes, but now we see the 2011 Chrysler 300 with its redesigned interior and exterior.  Keeping the same general shape, the new sheetmetal isn’t so much revolutionary as it is evolutionary, which should be a good thing for the Fiat-run domestic automaker.  Click past the jump for a slew of pictures, the press release, and my impressions.

Chrysler announces the American-Bound Fiat 500

Ever since Fiat took control of Chrysler, we knew this day would arrive.  The questions, however, were many.  How much would change between the European Fiat 500 and the American version?  Will it sell?  What will it look like?  Where will they sell it?  Well, today I have answers for a few of those questions.  First, there will be around 600 dealers appointed by Chrysler to sell Fiats.  Second, the first Fiat to hit our shores, the 500 Sport, will look like the photo above and the pictures found after the jump.  Third, as to whether or not it will sell, that depends upon pricing and American mindsets when it reaches us later this year, but I think it’ll be fairly popular with the city crowd as a much better alternative to the Smart ForTwo.

Chrysler to update Powertrains: The Missing Link?

Since the mid 2000s, Chrysler has gotten a lot of complaints about its exterior and interior designs, and for good reason.  Lately, vehicles like the Dodge Nitro have shown that Chrysler is changing their image, and it’s all for the better.  Fit and finish on both the inside and outside has improved, but refinement in the engine and transmission, the two biggest components of a vehicle’s powertrain, is still lacking, as is fuel mileage.  Chrysler recently announced a new powertrain strategy, and while not surprising, it’s still good to hear.

How do you say Chrysler in Italian?

Chrysler LogoEarlier this year, Fiat Group purchased 20% of Chrysler Group, leaving 55% to the UAW (United Auto Workers) and the rest to the US and Canadian Governments.  To American drivers who remember when Fiats and Alfa Romeos were last sold in the United States, this can conjure up bad memories of rotting floorboards, rusty fenders, and finicky engines.  I think the new Chrysler/Fiat merger means good things to those of us stateside, and I’ll tell you why.

Industry Update: Company Ownership

Since the early 1900s, vehicle manufacturers have been buying and selling each other, trying to grow their combined business.  Some of these ploys work (GM buying Cadillac in 1909) while others fizzle out (GM buying Hummer in 1998).  In today’s uncertain automotive times, the Detroit 3 are trying to streamline their companies, to cut operating costs and slough off under performing brands.  In order to answer the question of whose product you’re really buying when you buy a car, truck or SUV in America, I will go into a little detail as to which companies are on the block, which have already been sold, and which are dying (or already deceased).
