Buick’s Resurgence Continues with all-new Verano

Part of making and keeping an automotive brand viable is introducing new cars to its lineup.  The built-in mechanism for this is that each generation of a car model gets bigger than its predecessor.  This leads to an opening beneath what was once your entry-level car, for a new entry-level car.  For the new Buick, that car was the Regal, but now the Chevrolet Cruze has debuted, giving Buick a workable platform to jump off of.  Read on for details and pictures of the new Buick Verano.

Sales Figures: October, 2010

The spookiest month of the year is over … and it wasn’t scary for most automakers.  Sales were down just a hair from September, which I expected, as schools get into full swing and most people start shopping for the holidays.  I don’t expect sales to pick back up until closer to the new year, with some people receiving transportation as a gift, and any leftover 2010 models having their prices slashed.

The sky isn’t always blue: Chevy Cobalt being recalled?

From the “grass isn’t always greener” department, the Chevrolet Cobalt is under investigation by the federal government for power steering-related safety issues.  There have been 1,132 complaints, with 11 crashes, 1 injury and no deaths.  There are 905,000 vehicles which may be involved.  The complaints center around a loss of power steering functionality.  This leads to hard-to-control vehicles, mostly when changing lanes, presumably to pull over and stop the car.

The Cobalt will be replaced later this year by the 2011 Chevy Cruze.

U.S. Production Chevy Cruze Unveiled

At the Detroit Auto Show this week, Chevrolet unveiled its Cruze, the replacement for the aging Cobalt compact car.  The Cruze shows great potential, with the latest tech features, increased sound deadening, good driving dynamics, fit and finish and quality of materials.  Chevy is touting a 500-mile range for the Cruze with the 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which equates to 35 MPG highway, assuming a 14-gallon gas tank.  The rest of the details pretty much mirror what we Hail Mary: Chevrolet’s Cruze, cruising into L.A., so I’ll skip to the highlight reel:

The L.A. Auto Show is this week, and every year manufacturers show the best of their new cars, trucks, SUVs and now crossovers.  This year, GM has two vehicles, and the Cruze is arguably the more important of the two.  The other is the Volt, which we will be reporting on when more information becomes available.
