Detroit 2012: Ford Announces 2013 Fusion

Ford’s Fusion, which debuted in the 2006 model year, was a big milestone for Ford.  It marked the beginning of a turnaround for Ford’s car division, which lost its way after the much-lauded Taurus became a dinosaur in the mid-sized sedan market.  Since the Taurus/Five Hundred had moved up to the full-size sedan market, a new mid-sized sedan was called for, especially one which would be competitive against offerings from Honda and Toyota.  The Fusion has been a great success, especially since its 2010 refresh, and for 2013, Ford is pulling out all the stops with its redesign.  Continue reading for details, pictures and Ford’s press release.

February 2011 Sales and Analysis

February was a great month for new-car sales, with the total volume up 21.28% over January, and almost 27% over February of 2010.  Those are the overall numbers, but the general trend for February was that American car companies had a good time, while most of their overseas competitors struggled.  Click past the jump for my analysis and graphs.

Toyota expands application of Brake Override system

A while back, I wrote that Toyota was installing a “brake override” system on its cars.  As it turns out, they’ve also begun adding the system to recalled cars as well as ones in its sales pipeline.  Today, Toyota announced that it would be expanding the lineup of cars receiving the override, to include the Tacoma, Venza and Sequoia.  While the former two are getting the fix when they show up for any of the recalls, Sequoia owners will be sent a letter and will be allowed to schedule a time to get the brake override installed.  Previously, only the Toyota Avalon, Camry, Lexus IS and ES cars were receiving the override system upgrade.  The brake override system ignores gas pedal input when the brakes are pressed, in order to help prevent runaway cars.

PedalGate Updates: 2010 Camry recalled, 2004-2008 Tacoma investigated

It seems that Toyota just can’t keep out of the spotlight.  Now it’s recalling 7,314 four-cylinder Camry sedans over a faulty power steering hose, which has been found as the reason behind a loss of brake fluid.  It appears that the power steering hose rubs against one of the brake hoses, and over time may wear a hole in it, causing the car to leak brake fluid.  This leads to a loss of braking power.

Was the NHTSA investigating Toyota’s problems in 2004?

As if it couldn’t get any worse for Toyota, it seems it has.  The Detroit Free Press is reporting that in 2008, there was a lawsuit after Guadalupe Alberto of Flint, MI, died when her out-of-control 2005 Camry crashed.  The suit alleged that the Camry in question was suffering from the sticky gas pedal problem I reported on earlier today.  Continue reading for more details.

Industry Update: Top-Selling Vehicles of 2009

2010 F-150 Front

For automakers, 2009 has been tumultuous, to say the least.  With all the troubles manufacturers have had, it’s no surprise that year-to-year sales are way down.  Whereas 2008 saw the sales of 13.2 million vehicles, that number was down from 2007′s sales of 16.1 million vehicles.  Sales in 2009 are predicted to be around 10.5 million, a precipitous decline.  Despite the overall slump in sales, there are still winners and losers.  AutoBlog does a good job of listing them, so click here to see their list, complete with pictures.  Click through the jump to see the list here.
