With the first month of 2011 done with, a lot of eyes are on the automotive sector of our economy. New-car sales figures are used by some as a bellwether of the national economy. If consumers are spending money on new cars, it means they are happy and secure in their jobs, have some sort of savings, and are willing to spend some of their precious income. When times are rougher, people obviously will forgo buying a new car until their situation improves.

Now that both the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf are in consumers’ hands, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the subject of Electric Vehicles, or EVs.

The average age of a Buick customer is north of 60 years old. While that has kept Buick from becoming a part of GM’s history like Oldsmobile and Pontiac, it isn’t enough to sustain itself as part of the new GM. The most obvious course of action would be to lower that average age to somewhere closer to 30 years old. The big question then is to ask how a car company can accomplish this, especially given GM’s current lack of funds to do a lot of research and development.
Somehow the Nissan Leaf has been overlooked by many, but Nissan announced today how the purchase process will work, when cars will be delivered, and some nice photographs of the Leaf. The Nissan Leaf is a new Electric Vehicle (EV) which will be on sale in the United States later this year, which Nissan touts as being the first mass-market electric vehicle in the US.
