Older Jeep Grand Cherokee under investigation for gas tank problem

1998 and 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

According to Automotive News, the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV is under an investigation for possible gas tank problems.  So far, the NHTSA has been notified of 13 deaths as the result of 10 crashes, while Business Week is reporting a total of 55 deaths.  The investigation is reportedly being asked for by the Center for Automotive Safety, a non-profit group founded by Ralph Nader.  Chrysler is cooperating with the NHTSA fully, and although “The existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect … Further review and investigation into these incidents is needed.”

100 MPH crash caught by police officer’s dash camera!

A 100-mph (estimated) crash was caught on a dashboard camera by a Sugarcreek Township police car, in the Beaver Creek area of Ohio.  The driver, 19 year-old Brennan S. Eden, was driving his Pontiac Firebird on the median strip when he struck the guardrail, launched his car sideways, and careened into the center post of an overpass.  At that point, he was ejected from the car and the car itself split into 3 pieces.  Surprisingly, Eden lived, and was conscious at the scene, although for obvious reasons he was flown to Miami Valley Hospital where he’s listed in critical condition.  The crash happened around 7:15am on August 23rd, shutting down southbound traffic for 6 hours on I-675.  Click past the jump for the video.

New Post Category: Vehicle Redesign

In an effort to keep Road Reality well-organized, some changes will periodically have to be made.  The first of which is today’ introduction of a new category: Vehicle Redesign.  This change will be made retroactively to posts I feel fit best in it, but for existing posts, they will also stay in the “Hot Car – Upcoming” category, for legacy reasons.

Announced: 2011 Nissan Murano

Ever since it’s introduction in 2002 as a 2003 model, Nissan’s Murano has had polarizing looks… you either love it, or hate it.  For 2011, the automaker has given its biggest crossover a makeover of sorts.  While its engine is the same and the underpinnings haven’t been touched, the body and interior have seen a working over, and I like what they’ve done.  Plenty of details and pictures after the jump.

Painful Growth: 9-day long traffic jam in China continues on

From the “And you thought YOU had it bad?” department comes a report from the AFP, via Google News.  The report says that drivers on the Beijing-Tibet expressway experienced a slowdown on August 14th due to extra cargo trucks entering the roadway headed for the capital, and the problem was compounded 5 days later by scheduled roadway maintenance.  Now there’s a mini-economy of merchants selling food and water at inflated prices to stranded motorists – who says greed isn’t good?  The traffic jam, which crawls continuously, is expected to last until the end of the road maintenance, which is scheduled to continue until mid-September.

Chalk this up the rate of growth of the Chinese automobile industry – it’s seen an increase of 1 million cars in the last 2.5 years, almost ten times faster than cities like Tokyo did it.
