Update: Visual of Toyota Pedal Issues

In the latest recall, Toyota is having trouble with their gas pedal assemblies, built by CTS Corporation.  That’s not news.  The neat thing is the image I dug up on Globe and Mail, shown to the left.  Click on it to see the full version.

Was the NHTSA investigating Toyota’s problems in 2004?

As if it couldn’t get any worse for Toyota, it seems it has.  The Detroit Free Press is reporting that in 2008, there was a lawsuit after Guadalupe Alberto of Flint, MI, died when her out-of-control 2005 Camry crashed.  The suit alleged that the Camry in question was suffering from the sticky gas pedal problem I reported on earlier today.  Continue reading for more details.

Updates: More Toyota recall information

2010 Toyota Matrix XRS

So, overnight a lot happened with concern to Toyota.  While there are several things going on, I’m going to boil it down to a manageable amount of information for you to digest.  If you’d like, skip to the end of the post to read my synopsis of what’s currently going with Toyota, but in short, not much of it is good, and some of it is very bad.  We haven’t seen this much bad PR for a car maker since the Ford/Firestone fiasco ten years ago, and that recall affected far fewer vehicles.

DOT Bans texting for Commercial drivers

A lot of states have begun banning texting for drivers, and some go as far as fining drivers who aren’t using a hands-free device, such as Bluetooth, to make and receive their calls.  A study by Virginia Tech Researchers found that drivers who are distracted by cell phones and other devices are 23 times more likely to crash than those who pay attention to the road.

GM offers Toyota, Lexus buyers Incentives

Automotive News is reporting that GM has announced incentives for current Toyota and Lexus owners, in a bid to lure buyers away from the Japanese automaker.  The deal is simple: if you own or lease a Toyota or Lexus vehicle, you get financing, cash back or free payments.

It will be interesting to see how many sales GM gets out of the deal, but any sales they get will be beneficial.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Toyota/Lexus Lessees: GM will waive 3 monthly payments, up to $1,000.

Financing buyers: 0% financing for 60 months.

Cash buyers: $1,000 cash back.

Breaking News: The Fix is In!

On the heels of our previous report, Toyota announced that it has new pedal assemblies that supposedly fix the wear & tear issue plaguing Toyota owners.  The company producing the replacements is CTS Corporation, and while they have already shipped some units to assembly plants, they only have a yearly capacity of 2 million, which makes you wonder how long it’s going to be until all of the affected cars have their gas pedals replaced.
