Breaking News: GM to Wind Down Saab

It was announced this morning that GM will begin “winding down” operations of their subsidiary, Saab.  GM has been trying all year to find a buyer for Saab, but has been unable to complete a sale, after last month’s failure to sell to Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg and this month’s failure to sell to Dutch automaker Spyker Cars.  GM is following through on an earlier statement where they announced that if they couldn’t find a buyer by year’s end, they’d wind down its operations.

In the press release made this morning, GM also stated that Saab’s debts would be paid, as this is not a bankruptcy or forced liquidation.  They will also be honoring warranties and providing spare parts to dealers.  It’s always a sad day when a manufacturer with such a long history has its doors closed for good.

Saab only sold 23,186 cars in North America in 2008, a decrease of about 34% from 2007, when the Swedish automaker sold 35,175 cars.

News: 2011 BMW 7-Series Engines

BMW has just released details on the engines available in the 2011 7-Series sedan.  While it’s had a V8 for many years, a 6-cylinder engine has been unavailable for some time.  With recent engine designs giving far more power and power adders like the turbochargers BMW employs on its 335 and 535, an 8-cylinder engine is no longer needed to move the big 7-Series with gusto.  A side benefit, of which every car manufacturer is worried about these days, is efficiency.  Gas mileage is a bigger and bigger deciding factor when buyers narrow down their car-shopping lists, but the people shopping in the rarified air that the 7-Series occupies are less likely to care than the average commuter.  The gas mileage matters more to the manufacturer, with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements slated to rise in the coming years.  The CAFE standard, put simply, is the average fuel economy of all passenger cars a manufacturer sells, so by offering a smaller engine on its 7-Series, BMW is hoping to raise their CAFE number ever so slightly.  Look for a 1-2 MPG difference between the available 6 and 8-cylinder engines on the 2011 7-Series cars, which will be labeled the 740 and 750, respectively.

Bad Marketing: Chevy Volt Song & Dance

The Chevrolet Volt has plenty going for it – a new chassis, electric vehicle operation, a nice interior (from what has been shown so far).  Then, the video below showed up.  Bad dancing doesn’t help out the lackluster song, both of which are far too repetitive, and whomever decided that breakdancing mixes well with the 70′s-style dancing needs to have their head examined.  If you’ve got the stomach for bad video, go ahead and hit play on the video, otherwise, take my word for it: you’re not missing out on much of anything!  Follow the jump to see the video.

Wi-Fi on the go: GM adds Internet connectivity to its utility vehicles

GM announced today that they are now offering in-car Wi-Fi, the technology that connects your smart phone, laptop and other wireless internet devices to the Internet.  It’s called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile, and it turns your Chevrolet vehicle into a mobile Wi-Fi spot, like your local Starbucks, except you won’t have to buy a cup of coffee to use it.  Continue reading for more details.

Review: 2010 Dodge Nitro

What comes to mind when someone says the word nitro?  TNT, explosions, gold rushes, strip mining?  Well, Dodge played off this when they introduced the Nitro in 2007, and the first time you give the compact SUV a healthy dose of the gas pedal, all of those mental images will come rushing back.  This is the first compact SUV I’ve driven that actually pushes you back in your seat, but feels refined at the same time.  What else has Dodge done in the Nitro’s creation?

Fun Stuff: Motorycle that assembles itself?

I know it’s not a car, truck or other 4-wheeled vehicle, but I think it’s fun, so it’s showing up here.  Besides, who doesn’t like the Peter Gabriel song “Sledgehammer”, which the video uses as background music?  Filmed by Noah, and built by Noah’s dad, the video shows a Suzuki GSX-R building itself, stop-motion style.  Follow the jump to see the video.
